Description:
The Mechanic, Works will perform a wide range of maintenance and preventative maintenance activities including repair and maintenance of PortsToronto's vehicles and/or equipment. This position will accurately maintain vehicles and/or equipment records by recording service and repairs, keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions, and maintain necessary supplies.
Note: *This is a Union represented position belonging to CUPE Local 416*
RESPONSIBILITIES:
General activities and functions include, but are not limited to:
- Preventive maintenance servicing to all vehicles and equipment
- Service and repair to all vehicles to MTO regulations
- Satisfactorily carry out inspections and mechanical/hydraulic repairs to all types of equipment i.e., lawn mowers, outboards, boom trucks, front-end loaders, etc.
- Satisfactorily carry out inspections and mechanic/hydraulic repairs to marine equipment i.e., tugs, ferries, work boats, outboards, etc.
- Service and repair to mobile plant such as welding machines, generators, pumps, and construction equipment
- Keep Foreperson informed of progress of assigned work
- Order necessary materials for work in progress
- Must wear designated safety equipment/PPE as required.
- Must adhere to all PortsToronto policies and procedures.
- Must comply with all Health and Safety policies, procedures, and legislated requirements
- Other duties as assigned by PortsToronto.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES
- Must possess Ontario Class "A" Mechanics license (310S-Automotive and 310T-Truck and Coach) with diesel endorsement
- Requires a minimum of 5 years of experience working on varied equipment i.e., front-end loader, back-hoe, dozer, Commercial Vehicle Registered (CVOR) and passenger vehicles
- Must have own tools
- Must possess a recognized First Aid Certificate
- Valid Class "DZ" Driver's License
- Able to lift up to 25 Kgs (50 Lbs) floor to waist.
- Must have thorough knowledge of Ministry of Transport (MTO) regulations and repair procedures.
- Must be able to carry out MTO annual motor vehicle safety inspections and administer certificates, including CVOR vehicles.
- Must have working knowledge of maintenance and repair procedures for vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Must be accurate
- Must have thorough knowledge of repair procedures to gas and diesel engines as well as knowledge of welding and cutting equipment.
- Must be able to work independently with limited supervision.
- Must have good communication skills
- Must be in good physical condition, able to work indoors and outdoors including all weather conditions.
- Able to swim, and tread water for 2 minutes is recommended
CONDITIONS:
- Criminal record check will be conducted on hire
- Annual Driver's License validity check, as applicable.
- Flexibility to work extended hours or weekends, as the need arises
HOURS OF WORK: Scheduled for 7.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday, between 700 to 1800h, Shift work may be
required. Weekends and holidays may be required.
COMPENSATION: $46.24/hour
