"Last winter, 50 of the region's most vulnerable people experiencing homelessness were helped to move into permanent housing in a community-wide effort sparked by the closure of Out of the Cold sites.
This winter The Region will also pilot a new initiative with the Working Centre to offer another option for the few people who are "unable or unwilling to access emergency shelters."
These two "bunkies" will be basic accommodation in a small, shed-sized structure with a bed, capacity for heating and bathroom facilities.
"This is an option that we want to ensure no one is left out in the cold," Morrison said. "It's an interim response to keep them safe."
The idea came from another community, she said, and is intended to be an option for the five to 20 people across the region who choose to stay outside primarily, who may be disconnected from services or pose a risk to others in a group shelter setting."
