About Shelter

The option to live in low barrier shelters is an important component of the housing and shelter system.  As increasing numbers of people are living unsheltered, The Working Centre has worked to create a number of shelters that support people who are unable to make the traditional shelter system work; operating as temporary shelter while people continue to look for housing.

Erbs Road Shelter

Erbs Road Shelter hosts 50 cabins that support people who were living in encampments, providing an individual small cabin for each resident. Couples each have their own cabin.  Pets are welcome. We actively support people to connect with housing supports and opportunities.  Health care supports are available on site, as well as a wide range of community resources. We offer a daily shuttle service to support access to the downtown areas.

King Street Shelter

King Street Shelter, offered in cooperation with the Region of Waterloo, is a low barrier, congregate shelter supporting 100 people. This is a co-ed environment and includes shared space for couples. Pets are welcome. We work actively to help residents to connect with housing supports and opportunities. Health care services are available on site, often for people facing complex medical issues. A wide range of community services provide on-site supports.

This important shelter option is scheduled to close March 31, 2025.

A Better Tent City

ABTC operates outside of the shelter system, ABTC is a novel community-based approach to providing a home and a sense of belonging for approximately 50-70 residents who have experienced chronic homelessness in Waterloo Region; The Working Centre collaborated with ABTC to help establish the project and we remain supportive through serving on their Board, and weaving together on-the-ground outreach supports.
