Housing and Shelter

The Working Centre has persistently responded to the issues of poverty and homelessness.

We work to create new affordable housing opportunities, to preserve existing affordable housing, and to support low-barrier shelter options. Housing and Shelter are an important basic need.

Once housing is stable, we work to build safety, belonging and respect.

Tucked into 15 buildings/houses owned by The Working Centre and a couple of rental locations, our housing/shelter work includes:
  • 100 units of affordable housing – some with a focus on refugees/New Canadians, some focused on affordability, one house designed as a dry house
  • 6 transitional housing units for refugees
  • 12 transitional health-focused supported housing
  • A 100 person congregate low-barrier shelter for people experiencing long-term homelessness
  • A 50 cabin shelter for people moving from encampments and unsheltered homelessness
  • 8 units of supportive housing creating a stable living situation for those facing complex needs
  • 21 units of housing providing safe housing for 35 Refugee/Immigrant women and their children
  • We are completing construction of 44 units of affordable housing at our new Making Home site at 97 Victoria – set for occupancy in summer of 2025

In our outreach work, we continue to support people living in encampments, and help people access the current housing system.

We link with housing resources, problem-solving, walking with people facing the complexities of homelessness, and continue to advocate for more rapid responses to the housing crisis in our community.
