Fresh Ground Cafe will be hosting the graduation ceremony for the 2016 Diploma in Local Democracy class.

This past winter (January-April) we had a highly energetic group of participants who worked their way through engaging conversations about living democracy in everyday life. We want to set aside this evening to celebrate both the hard work and commitment of our graduates and the spirit of Local Democracy.

For those who might be interested in taking the Diploma this coming winter the evening will be a great occasion to explore your curiosity, to meet some of our graduates, and to hear their experience with the course. You will also have the opportunity to sign up for the course with applications and other materials available.

This year we will be holding our graduation in conjunction with Renison College’s Humanities 101 program. Humanities 101 is a non-credit course offered at the University of Waterloo aimed at providing access to a university-level course for non-traditional students. It is traditionally held in the spring term. In the past few years there has been a growing number of students who have taken both the Diploma in Local Democracy and Humanities 101. We feel that bringing these two classes together in graduation builds on the relationship that has already developed and promises to increase a cross-pollination of enthusiasm, ideas, and students between the two programs.

The evening’s convocation address will be delivered by Jonathan Massimi, of the City of Kitchener and formerly of the United Way, who will talk about the connections between John McKnight’s work on community and democratic practice. Such a theme dovetails nicely with many of our diverse educational initiatives here at the Working Centre – from our programs offered in partnership with Wilfred Laurier University to the Diploma in Local Democracy to the learning culture fostered in our Community Tools projects.

The next Diploma in Local Democracy class begins Wednesday, January 3, 2017 and runs every Wednesday night from 7-9 pm until the end of April, with a three-week break at the beginning of March.  Email isaiahr@theworkingcentre.org or call Isaiah at 519-743-1151 #175 for more information.
